The Health Benefits of Apple

An apple a day keeps the doctor away


Apple is one of the healthiest fruits that a person can take on a daily basis. A popular Welsh proverbs says that” An apple a day keeps the doctor away from you”. Apple is one of the most cultivated & consumed fruits in the world. Apple is scientifically called “Malus domestica”. Eating apples on a regular basis has a lot of long & short time benefits. 

Generally, apple helps in weight loss, improves eyesight, helps prevent cancer, facilitates digestion, regulates blood sugar levels, lowers cholesterol levels in the body, is useful in
treating anaemia. Apple can prevent a lot of diseases that afflict people in their old age.

The constituents of apples include dietary fiber, flavonoid, triterpenoids & antioxidant. Each of the constituents of apple has a role it plays in the human body & we will be looking at them one after the other.

Antioxidant

Antioxidant boosts & fortifies the immune system, especially during periods of stress. It also preserves acetylcholine levels as low levels of acetylcholine can lead to Alzheimer’s disease.
Apple helps the brain to function optimally even in old age. The antioxidant which is present in apple protects the brain from age-related mental decline. 

Fibers

Fiber reduces blood sugar swings, controls body weight & cholesterol levels, neutralizes irritable bowel syndrome, & alleviates haemorrhoids. 
Fiber also protects the body against Parkinson disease. High fiber intake can reduce the risk of colorectal cancer.    

Flavonoid

Flavanoid reduces the risk of developing pancreatic cancer by as much as 23%.

Triterpenoids

The risk of developing colon cancer, liver cancer, & breast cancer is greatly reduced as apple peel contains compounds called triterpenoids that can inhibit the growth of cancer cells in the colon, liver & breast.

When & How Should Apple be Eaten

Apple can be eaten at any time of the day but for maximum benefits it should be taken preferably in the morning with the skin after your morning meal as this gently stimulates bowel movement. You may also choose to make your own home made apple juice. 
Additionally, an apple in the morning is very good for people suffering from irregular bowel movements or constipation.
