Is Eating Red Meat Good or Bad for Your Health

Prepared meat is very, very appealing to the eyes and taste very delicious when eaten but should we really eat meat the way our body desires it.

A healthy intake of protein is essential for the general growth, maintenance & repair of the body. For the proper development of the muscles, bones, cartilage and blood a healthy intake of protein is recommended. Protein is very, very important for the human body to grow and function properly but it has to be taken with caution depending on your age. Children require a large amount of protein due to the fact that they are still growing compare to adults and the elderly.

Meat whether red or white is composed mainly of water, protein, amino acids and fat & essentially prevents zinc and iron deficiency in the body. Low levels of iron in the body can lead to anemia which can manifest with symptoms such as fatigue, headache, inability to concentrate and touchiness.

Red meat for instance, contains vitamin B6, which is vital for normal immune function & helps to regulate blood sugar levels, & B12 a building block for red blood cells & the DNA inside the cells.

Red meat is also rich in iron, a component responsible for the metabolism of energy, cognitive development in children, formation of red blood cells and transportation of oxygen in the blood. The body cells can't survive without iron.

However we must exercise caution when consuming red meat as high consumption of red meat can lead to production of high levels of uric acid, which causes gout ( a metabolic disease marked by a painful inflammation).

According to medical experts, high levels of iron in red meat can have undesirable effects on a person's health as he ages though this is not the case for growing children.

The Importance of Water to Our Well-Being & Health

Water is a colourless, odourless, tasteless substance that is a liquid at room temperature with the chemical formula H2O. After Oxygen which is present in air, water is the second most important substance that the body needs for survival. You can survive on water alone without food for at least two weeks but you may die from dehydration if you stay without water for more than 3 days.

Water makes up about 65-75% of the human body. About 75% of the earth’s surface is covered with water, some organisms such as fishes won’t be able to survive without water, plants won’t be able to photosynthesize their food without water & as a result there won’t be life because every other organism depends either directly or indirectly on plants for survival. So we can say that life depends on water or that water is life.

Even though water is one of the most common substance, it is much more precious than gold & diamond to the human body. People feel that water is too cheap & common to be consumed in large amounts. Many people would rather consume 4 litres of alcohol on a daily basis than 4 litres of water on a daily basis. A lot of people when thirsty would consume large volumes of liquids such as beer, soft-drinks such as Coca-Cola, coffee, tea & non-alcoholic beverages. These liquids can never, never play the role of water in your body & when taken excessively they become dangerous to the body.

Function of Water in the Human Body

  • Water help to:
  • Flush out wastes & toxins.
  • Regulate body temperature.
  • Acts as shock absorber for joints, bones & muscles.
  • Cleanses the body inside & out.
  • Transports nutrients, proteins, vitamins, minerals & sugars for assimilation.
  • Helps in regulating body weight.
  • Maintains the proper function of the body system.
  • Helps the body to work at its peak.

Problems Associated with Lack of Adequate Water in the Human Body

A lot of problems can arise when you are not drinking the right amount of water that your body needs & they include:
Suffering from aches, constipation, skin eruptions, fatigue, pains etc.
Passing out co-loured urine.
Skin dehydration.
Poor water retention
Edema
Bloating

Many people actually have these problems because they are simply not drinking enough water. Once they increase the amount of water they drink these ailments disappears.

How Much Water Should Be Consumed?

You are supposed to drink about 4-5 litres of water on a daily basis or 6-8 glasses of water per day. Make sure that the water you are drinking is clean, colourless, odourless & tasteless. You may not be able to drink up to 6-8 glasses of water initially, but start with a little amount & steadily increase your daily intake as it is said that the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. You can increase the cleansing effect of water by adding a slice of lemon.
